For facts, figures, and statistical data from the world of dermatology, look no further. Twelve interesting tidbits await your eyes.

  1. More than 80% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 years develop acne to some degree.
  2. More than 2/5 of all adolescents suffer from acne severe enough to cause them to seek treatment from a physician or dermatologist.
  3. An estimated 11% of the population suffers from persistent acne lasting throughout adulthood.
  4. Hidradenitis suppurativa, a very severe form of acne affecting the axilla, groin, perineum, buttocks, scrotum, submammary region, and perianal region, occurs in up to 4% of the population in industrialized nations; this condition may lead to serious complications.
  5. Post-acne scarring may affect up to 95% of patients with acne.
  6. A recent study found that radiotherapy afforded complete relief to 38% of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, and "dramatic" improvement to an additional 40%.
  7. In 2003, 120 women using the acne medication isotretinoin became pregnant, in spite of the drug’s known connection to elevated risk of birth defects and other pregnancy problems.
  8. A 2000 study found that 44% of patients with acne suffered from anxiety, and an additional 18% from depression; treatment for acne substantially reduced the incidence of both psychiatric conditions.
  9. More than half of all cases of acne rosacea will affect the eyes in some way.
  10. Acne rosacea occurs most often in people between the ages of 30 and 60 years, and may affect as many as 17 million Americans; nonetheless, some 78% know nothing about rosacea, not even how to recognize it.
  11. Some 96% of all rosacea sufferers are Caucasian.
  12. Approximately 40% of patients with rosacea avoid public contact or cancel social engagements as a direct result of embarrassment over their condition.
